Futuristic and Visionary Car Park Basement Ventilation Solution

Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) as per National Building Code (NBC) are most commonly and widely used gas sensor for basement car park application to detect the accumulation and increase in CO and NO2 gas concentration exhausted from petrol and diesel powered vehicles and locomotives. Our main objective as per Global standards is the dilute the gas concertation by means on purging fresh air and simultaneously exhausting the accumulated toxic gases with the help of Supply and exhaust air fans along with the dual speed Impulse fans (JET air fans) to distribute the air across the entire basement area.

As per European Standard acc. To EN 50545-1 and as per ASHRAE Standard 62.1, CO and NO2 gas sensor are intended to control a ventilation system and/or to give an indication, alarm or any other signal to warn of a toxic hazard. These gases are generically called “target gases, apart from these gases LPG, CNG (CH4) and Hydrogen (H2) are the other probable gases entitled in the car park basement application from LPG, CNG powered up vehicles along with latest battery operated/hydrogen fuel cell/hybrid technology vehicles which are highly flammable/combustible in nature and can result in a catastrophic disaster if not detected/identified at the early stages for critical life safety and asset protection which could also become the main source of fire.

For a futuristic Visionary Basement ventilation car park solution, we should adopt the following gas type such as CO, NO2, LPG, HC (CNG and H2) gases along with smart digital control system where the Gas Detectors shall be connected in a daisy loop fashion as shown below:

Car Park

Here the traceability of the gas sensors and identification of the fault error signals becomes very easy compared to the conventional method of direct coupling of analog signal from each gas sensor making the system more complex, bulky and expensive.

Australian standard AS 1668.2-2012 and Building Code Australia Section “J” indicates that the ventilation of the parking structures should be continuous, 24/7. However, by ventilating only when the sensors indicate a requirement, energy can be conserved both from reduced fan operation and also from any related heating or cooling costs and CO gas radical’s detection for enhanced Very Early Fire Detection

The selection of CO sensor being the most common gas found in car park basement application also plays a vital role to achieve the energy saving and make the entire system more efficient and reliable with linear variation to detect not only just CO gas but to also detect enhanced CO gas radicals having detection capability for very early smouldering fire and smoke detection (product of gas radicals generated due to products of combustion fire)
