Are you ready for the EN 50545-1?

csm_msre16slider_safety1-en_0d773ee5b6-1

The EN 50545-1 is Europe’s response to the demand for more safety in tunnels und garages.
Effective from August 2014 the mandatory standard defines the standard of the detection and gas warning technology as well as the measurement in target systems and is further interpreted from country to country. Nevertheless, the standard is still not fully implemented by many manufacturers.
What is the EN 50545 in detail?

The target gases of the standard are those that are important for the safety in garages CO, NO und NO2. These are the result of combustion products in motor vehicles. Depending on the country there may also be additional gases. There are strict specifications for calibration accuracy with a maximum of 3 % deviation. The alarm systems must be triggered in a predetermined calculation and reaction time. The IP54 protection class for the sensors and the integration of an emergency power supply into the gas alarm system is required for the systems used.

The setting options of the alarm thresholds are now carried out according to international regulations, but also may be made stricter nationally. In addition there are exact longevity requirements. The definition of the software quality are made via the reference to the EN 50271. A SIL1 compliance is required here, but the FMEDA calculation is not mandatory. Narrow definitions of temperature, humidity and foreign gas influences require a high production standard for sensor and gas alarm systems manufacturers.

The catalog of specifications therefore includes narrowly defined production limits. It takes a large amount of technical effort in order to be able to confidently confront the standard. MSR-Electronic has overcome these obstacles through many years of experience in gas detection technology and had their products certified.

How do you get the certification?
In order to obtain a certification according to the new EN 50545-1, the producer needs to pass the extensive test catalog with different test definitions. To review the rules there is now a specification all over Europe for a uniform type examination. This controls whether you have EN 50545-1 certified products, the complete system complies with the standard and is designated for safe public use.
With its philosophy „Safety First“, MSR-Electronic stands for maximum safety
Therefore MSR-Electronic is also one of the few gas detection technology companies that already complies with EN 50545-1 and also meets the SIL2 requirements. This means that MSR-Electronic goes one important step further in its safety concept with its products and focuses on SIL2 (EN 50545-1: SIL1).
This means for the customers of MSR-Electronic that they need not be concerned about the safety of their gas alarm system. MSR-Electronic has already covered that.

msre_es_graf_en_2016-9
In EN 50545-1 the responsibility stops at the signal evaluation. At MSR everything is covered from sensor to evaluation up to the actuators.
Consequently MSR-Electronic completes with its SIL2 complying products the closed loop and provides maximum safety systems.
The safety requirement level SIL (Safety Integrated Level) is a measure for the probability of failure of a functional system. It is indicated in levels from 1-4, whereby 1 represents the lowest level and level 3 is required only in most exceptional cases of gas detection technology.
Are your systems ready for the uniform type examinations in Europe?
On the subject of safety and innovations in garages and tunnels with EN 50545-1 and SIL by EN 50545-1 a symposium will be held in 2017.

Refrigerant Leak Detection in Supermarkets

For any supermarket, food retailing and air conditioning is associated with refrigeration. Behind the refrigerator and display cases that keeps the food at a desired low temperature; is a huge network that has refrigerant piping, valves, joints, compressors, condensers and many other such components. The leak of refrigerant gas from such commercial refrigeration systems is a major maintenance cost for super market chains. Gas leaks can also have a considerable effect on the environment. Hence, Refrigerant Leak Detection in Supermarkets is very crucial.

Over the past few years, large supermarket chains have become increasingly aware of refrigeration systems in their stores. This has happened for a number of reasons, most notably because refrigeration is one of the largest costs when setting up and running a store and there are a number of ways in which the associated systems can be optimized to save money. Now, with the added pressures placed upon those who operate commercial refrigeration systems by environmental legislation, the optimization of refrigeration systems is more important than ever.

As might be expected, the presence of refrigerant gas in large, complex mechanical refrigeration system inevitably leads to the occasional leak. Refrigerant is quite expensive and can have detrimental effects if leaked into the atmosphere. It is therefore imperative that leaks from refrigeration systems be minimised, both from financial and environmental points of view. By not having an appropriate Refrigerant Leak Detection in Supermarkets, you could be running your equipment inefficiently, risking breakdowns and unknowingly leaking expensive gases.

Gas Alarm Systems offers a complete system with sensors, controllers and warning device for for continuous monitoring of almost all types of refrigerants. Our sensors and controllers are easy to install and calibrate. The sensors detect the refrigerant gas in a particular range and depending upon the requirement can be configured for an analog or a digital output and triggers an alarm at a preset level. By recording the data around leak events, retailers can identify the problem areas. If such leak goes undetected it could degrade the refrigeration’s capacity to maintain proper cooling. Alarms are essentially warnings of such adverse conditions. Trained personnel can take action and call the appropriate store staff or maintenance personnel to avert situations where stock may be endangered.

Incorrect refrigerant handling can be very expensive through loss of energy efficiency, expensive refrigerant leakage and the risk of a catastrophic refrigerant leak. Installing Refrigerant Leak Detection in supermarkets  protects property and environment.

Monitoring CO2 in Breweries

CO2 is extremely hazardous as it is completely odourless and colourless and there is no physical indication of danger until it is usually too late.CO2 is a hazard throughout the brewing process, right through to packaging and bottling because as it is heavier than air, it collects at the bottom of containers and confined spaces such as tanks and cellars and can even spill out of fermenting tanks and sink to the brewery floor, where it forms deadly, invisible pockets. To avoid the hazards associated with CO2, Monitoring CO2 in Breweries is quite essential.

The majority of Carbon Dioxide gas in beverage industry is used during carbonating process. It is also used in fermentation and refrigeration.

During the bottling process a high volume of Carbon Dioxide can be emitted into the plant room. Also during transport or storage of Carbon Dioxide, there is always a risk of unnoticed gas leakage. Exposure to elevated levels of CO2 can cause headaches, drowsiness or even sudden death. Hence facilities where there is a possibility of Carbon Dioxide reaching to the dangerous level, an accurate and reliable CO2 control system should be installed to maintain a healthy work-place.

Carbon Dioxide is also released during fermentation process. To achieve and maintain high operational safety the level of CO2 should be controlled in fermentation rooms by continuously monitoring CO2 Breweries fermentation rooms.

At ALVI we offer innovative sensors and controllers to identify and immediately display the life threatening CO2 gas. These products are based on years of experience and were compiled with a lot of know-how and tailored to individual customer application.

IECEx and SIL 2 Approved Gas Detection

Process industries such as Oil & gas, Petrochemical, Refinery and Chemical industries need special precautions to handle different hazardous substances that are used in the process or present in the atmosphere. For the protection of personnel and plant constant monitoring of toxic and combustible gases and vapours is required. The gas detection sensors for monitoring such hazardous gases needs to be installed and maintained in extreme harsh conditions.. Hence such products need to comply with general standards and regulations that guarantees the safety of the system.

At GasAlarm Systems, we provide innovative IECEx and SIL 2 Approved Gas Detection sensors to suit almost every industrial application where extreme environmental conditions prevail.

Basically there are three hazard categories in any process palnt:

  • Combustible Gases: danger of explosion
  • Toxic Gases: Danger of poisoning
  • Oxygen: Danger of suffocation due to Oxygen deficiency or fire hazard due to excess Oxygen

Without technical aids human beings usually do not have the ability to recognize these dangers at an early stage in order to take preventive measures. GasAlarm systems therefore have a task of detecting hazards from toxic or combustible gases and vapors and to protect people, plants and the environment by means of appropriate measures.

Our PolyXeta II sensors with IECEx approval is an ideal solution for the gas detection in hazardous areas.

The sensors are classified into three main categories:

Detecting floating oil on top of a water tank

We ALVI – India/Australia takes pride to introduce Our Jola range of electrodes, it is a great device for installation in wastewater holding tanks for detecting floating oil on top of a water tank . The unit can be used for detecting floating oil on top of a water tank at a minimum level of 3-4mm!

As most oils have a specific gravity of less than water, the oil rises to the surface. This oily layer floating on top is detected by the sensor and an alarm is generated past the 3-4mm level.

The four floats help the unit sit on the surface & bob up & down with the tank level automatically. The sensor doesn’t need to be fixed at a certain level, like some devices. A thin layer of the non-conductive liquid – oil – is sufficient to lift the electrode rod tips of the rod electrode from the conductive water layer into the nonconductive oil layer. This interrupts the current flowing from the electrode relay via the rod electrode, and in turn activates an alarm.

A special “ILS” version is also available for tanks which might be completely dry from time to time. Normally, a dry tank will activate the alarm. Various float materials are available including PP & stainless steel.

Parking Guidance System for Smart Cities to enhances the attractiveness of India

Parking is critical for any business in shopping centres / Crowd Area. If you don’t have convenient parking, you don’t have customers as no one wants to drive around hunting for a single space among hundreds. Installing a parking guidance system – that would take a customer from the street all the way through to the individual available space; increases customers for a business and at the same time protects the environment.

ALVI -India in association with ALVI-Australia offers ultrasonic sensor which is placed above each parking space. This sensor indicates from a distance via an integrated LED, whether the parking space is free or occupied. While these sensors detect the single parking space, the ultrasonic counting sensors detect the outgoing cars. This data is then sent to the ParkGard control centre, which manages the number of free parking. Thus the individual sensors and signage that are connected to a central control system, gives parking management an extremely accurate counts of open spaces and where those spaces are and the visitors are easily headed to the nearest available parking space.

Floating Switches :- For Regulation and Signalling of Liquid Levels

ALVI India  in association with ALVI Australia and Jola Germany takes pride to introduce Floating Switch of different model for detecting the Liquid levels in a tank.

These floating switches are designed for mounting from the side or from the top.
To ensure a correct switching the cable must be fixed at the required height using a stuffing
gland, for example, in the case of mounting from the side or using a fixing weight, for example, in
case of mounting from the top.
These units are not suitable for use in turbulent liquids (e.g. in stirrer tanks).

Please note the following:
The floating switch SSP 1/K/… or SSP/S1/K/… is equipped with a gold-plated crosspoint contact.
One of the characteristic properties of gold-plated contacts is that they can reliably switch the
smallest voltages and smallest currents, even after extremely long standstill times.
These gold-plated contacts have the following unfavourable properties:

Jola – Fuel (Liquid) Leak Detector

ALVI – India in association with Gas Alarm Systems – Australia and Jola Germany offer Fuel Leak Detection.Industrial processes where fuel oil is used and stored, it is imperative to integrate an efficient fuel leak detection system to continuously protect distribution lines or storage tanks from leakage.

Most of the storage facilities in process industries, where spills are common, use bund as a part of spill containment system. Bund is a constructed retaining wall around storage providing a barrier to an unintended escape of material until remedial action is taken. It is best to detect the leak within the bund when the leak size is small avoiding further damage and expensive clean-up costs.

Bunding is widely used in fuel oil storage. Fuel oil such as petrol, diesel, kerosene, etc being non-conductive in nature , to detect and sense the presence of leak is a special challenge.
