Gas Safety Risks of Lithium-Ion Battery

Gas Safety Risks of Li-Ion Battery Charging Rooms

Li-Ion Battery Charging Rooms Li-Ion Batteries Charging, Storage Plants Li-Ion Batteries Short Circuit Fires
Li-Ion Batteries Fires Due to Over-Charging Hydrogen Fluoride Gas Threats from Li-Ion Batteries HF TWA: 3 ppm, STEL 6 ppm, NIOSH USA Heavier than Air
  • Li-Ion batteries are now widely being used in mobile phones, electric vehicles, laptops including MW range of Renewable Energy Storage plants, aircraft, submarine, mine-shaft, spacecrafts
  • Li-Ion batteries when overcharged or short circuited are overheated and catch fires
  • Li-Ion battery fires have caused great concern because of risks due to spontaneous fires and intense heat generated by such fires
  • As a result of the above-said a lethal amount of toxic Hydrogen Fluoride Gas, HF is generated
  • HF from Li-Ion battery fires can pose severe gas safety risks in confined spaces like battery charging rooms, renewable energy storage plants in solar or wind power plants
  • The electrolyte in Li-Ion battery is flammable and generally contains Lithium Hexa-Fluoro-Phosphate (LiPF6)
  • In the event of overheating due to overcharging or short circuiting in Li-Ion Batteries backed by high temperature, the electrolyte will vaporise liberating toxic gases like CO, CO2, HF (Hydrogen Fluoride)
  • The moisture and humidity will further exacerbate the situation generating more HF (reaction of LiPF6 with water, humidity)
  • Typical HF concentration expected can be as high as 20-200 ppm of HF (NIOSH/USA Safety limit, TWA:3 ppm HF, STEL: 6 ppm HF)

Solutions :

  • Continuous monitoring of HF, Hydrogen Fluoride in Toxic Range of NIOSH/USA : 0-10 ppm
  • Continuous monitoring of other toxic gases like CO, CO2 (gases generated due to the combustions
    fires)
  • Continues monitoring of humidity and temperature
  • Other Parameters like: CO, CO2, Temperature, Humidity, VEFSA (Very Early Fire and Smoke Alarm)

Safe Ripening Chambers

Fixed Gas Alarm Systems for the conservation and ripening process of fruit and vegetables

Ripening in controlled atmosphere Reliable monitoring of CO2 / C2H4 / C2H4O and O2 deficiency

Fresh fruit and vegetables are alive and continue to breathe after the harvest. This leads to oxygen consumption and the formation of carbon dioxide and water vapour. Keeping the products fresh means slowing down the process while maintaining the quality of the product. Gas sensors are just as important as the modern technology of the ripening chambers.

They are required to permanently monitor the various gas concentrations involved in the ripening process. The sensors, controllers and warning devices from MSR-Electronic protect people and equipment effectively and monitor the system as a central point of the entire process. Modern communication technology makes it possible to react quickly.

The innovative compact controller of the PolyGard®2 series from MSR-Electronic is de-signed for connecting up to 10 gas sensors via its own field bus, serves to warn of various gases and is therefore ideal for the application.

The process of banana ripening  is probably the best known and consists of introducing ethylene into the storage room at concentrations around 150–200 ppm to accelerate the natural ethylene production of the banana itself.

Futuristic and Visionary Car Park Basement Ventilation Solution

Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) as per National Building Code (NBC) are most commonly and widely used gas sensor for basement car park application to detect the accumulation and increase in CO and NO2 gas concentration exhausted from petrol and diesel powered vehicles and locomotives. Our main objective as per Global standards is the dilute the gas concertation by means on purging fresh air and simultaneously exhausting the accumulated toxic gases with the help of Supply and exhaust air fans along with the dual speed Impulse fans (JET air fans) to distribute the air across the entire basement area.

As per European Standard acc. To EN 50545-1 and as per ASHRAE Standard 62.1, CO and NO2 gas sensor are intended to control a ventilation system and/or to give an indication, alarm or any other signal to warn of a toxic hazard. These gases are generically called “target gases, apart from these gases LPG, CNG (CH4) and Hydrogen (H2) are the other probable gases entitled in the car park basement application from LPG, CNG powered up vehicles along with latest battery operated/hydrogen fuel cell/hybrid technology vehicles which are highly flammable/combustible in nature and can result in a catastrophic disaster if not detected/identified at the early stages for critical life safety and asset protection which could also become the main source of fire.

For a futuristic Visionary Basement ventilation car park solution, we should adopt the following gas type such as CO, NO2, LPG, HC (CNG and H2) gases along with smart digital control system where the Gas Detectors shall be connected in a daisy loop fashion as shown below:

Car Park

Here the traceability of the gas sensors and identification of the fault error signals becomes very easy compared to the conventional method of direct coupling of analog signal from each gas sensor making the system more complex, bulky and expensive.

Australian standard AS 1668.2-2012 and Building Code Australia Section “J” indicates that the ventilation of the parking structures should be continuous, 24/7. However, by ventilating only when the sensors indicate a requirement, energy can be conserved both from reduced fan operation and also from any related heating or cooling costs and CO gas radical’s detection for enhanced Very Early Fire Detection

The selection of CO sensor being the most common gas found in car park basement application also plays a vital role to achieve the energy saving and make the entire system more efficient and reliable with linear variation to detect not only just CO gas but to also detect enhanced CO gas radicals having detection capability for very early smouldering fire and smoke detection (product of gas radicals generated due to products of combustion fire)
